2024 CIUK Cluster Challenge

Hey Besties! Alces Flight Spills the Tea on the 2024 CIUK Cluster Challenge

After the incredible response from students in 2023 (and an even bigger one in 2024), Alces Flight is back at the CIUK Cluster Challenge, ready to engage in all things power and efficiency for the supercomputing world. Sure, our instructions may have been a little cringe—as our challengers like to say—but these teams brought curiosity, commitment, and some seriously impressive results.

It wasn’t long ago that power and cooling were barely on the radar for most supercomputing projects. But with demand for HPC and AI growing, we’re facing new challenges in managing it all—responsibly. Today’s work affects not only what we process now, but what future generations will need from these systems. Over three intense workload tasks, our challengers had to juggle power, time, and cost, learning firsthand how these factors both help and hinder each other. In the end, every team walked away with major insights—not just about how these elements shape the field today, but about their own potential to lead the charge in using HPC and AI to solve tomorrow’s problems, sustainably.

At Alces Flight, we specialise in subscription supercomputing, helping clients get the best from their HPC and AI solutions. Our products and economy of scale help reduce time, cost, and carbon footprint—whether you’re working with your own hardware, using public or private cloud, or a mix of all three. At Alces, we’ve got everything you need to keep your team focused on getting the best out of your solution.
