Opportunities: Building a Sustainable and Connected Future in Supercomputing

At Sustainable Reality 2025, we plan to close the day by looking ahead. Our session on Opportunities and Actions is about more than projects and programs. It is about the commitments and collaborations that will shape the next chapter of high performance computing (HPC) in the UK.

We are excited to welcome two guest speakers whose work demonstrates how national initiatives can translate ambition into lasting impact.

Dawn Geatches, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)

“Green Computing Initiatives: UKRI and Beyond”

What does green computing mean for a digital research infrastructure serving more than 8,000 staff, from day-to-day operations to advanced HPC workloads? Dawn will highlight UKRI’s efforts to cut the carbon footprint of its systems and share examples from across the UK, including the new Climate and Environmental Sustainability special interest group of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and an Innovate UK Innovation Challenge on component-level energy monitoring. Her talk will raise a call to action: how can we connect these efforts into a united green computing movement?

Damian Jones, Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

“Computing Insight UK and the Cluster Challenge”

For more than three decades, Computing Insight UK (CIUK) has been a focal point for the HPC community. Today, it is not only about showcasing technologies but also about inspiring the people who will carry them forward. Damian will spotlight the Student Cluster Challenge, launched in 2020, which has already become a powerful way to give students hands-on experience, build professional networks, and strengthen engagement with HPC. The message is clear: nurturing talent is central to sustaining the community’s future.

Together, these perspectives show that the real opportunity lies in joining forces. By aligning sustainability with skills development, and national programs with grassroots energy, we can ensure that the HPC community is ready for the challenges and possibilities ahead.

Join us on October 7th in London for the closing session to be part of the conversation on the actions and next steps that will define the future of supercomputing. The event is free to attend, but spaces are limited!
