About Us

Two individuals stand in front of a service dashboard, discussing their HPC/AI integration.

In supercomputing, decisions tend to outlast platforms, projects, and teams.

Alces Flight is part of the Alces Group. Our work sits upstream of delivery, focused on how decisions in high-performance computing and artificial intelligence are made, remembered, and sustained over time.

We exist because many of the most consequential choices in supercomputing persist well beyond the systems they produce. Those decisions shape not only technical infrastructure, but organisations, communities, and fields of practice.

This image demonstrates areas of decision stewardship Alces Flight operates in - including architectural design, hybrid compute, metrics and measures, and sustainability.

Our Position

Alces Flight is not a conventional business. We do not push sales out of the gate, nor begin with predefined solutions or assumed outcomes.

Instead, we work with organisations to:

  • clarify intent before commitment

  • surface constraints that tend to persist

  • make trade-offs explicit rather than implicit

  • preserve the rationale behind decisions, not just the artefacts

This work is often exploratory and iterative. In many cases, its value lies in preventing premature certainty.

I man sits with his laptop in front of the Earth, which has a set of HPC/AI clusters set behind him. He is currently planning out his power/cooling consumption and considering environmental impact.

Field stewardship

Alongside decision-focused work with organisations, Alces Flight undertakes stewardship roles that contribute to the continuity and health of the supercomputing field.

This has included:

  • advisory and convening roles within UK and international research infrastructure initiatives

  • stewardship of community programmes and conference series, including contributions connected to the SC, ISC, and CIUK conference ecosystem

  • sustained work on sustainability, social responsibility, and workforce development in HPC

This work exists to strengthen the conditions under which good decisions can be made, now and in the future.

A person at the top of a set of steps helps two others join him. This is a representation of how Alces Flight aims to empower people to make better decisions in HPC/AI.

Independence and continuity

Alces Flight operates independently of hardware vendors and hyperscale cloud providers. This independence is essential to our role: it allows us to work at the decision layer without pressure to converge on a particular technology, platform, or commercial outcome.

When delivery is appropriate, work may involve other parts of the Alces Group, including ConcertIM and Alces Software. Where this happens, it is done with clarity and intent.
