The Flight Crew chose to host the 2nd Annual Sustainable Reality event at a site that holds deep meaning to the High Performance Computing (HPC) community. Find out more about why we made our choice, learn about the history you’ll get to experience hands-on, and don’t forget to register for your free place for our September 25th event.
Why Bletchley Park?
Bletchley Park is more than just a historic site – it’s a symbol of innovation, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of computational knowledge. During World War Two, Bletchley Park played a crucial role in Allied victory by decoding the encrypted messages of Axis powers, thanks to the pioneering work of the Government Code and Cypher School. The insights gained from Bletchley Park’s efforts provided Allied forces with critical intelligence that shaped military strategies on land, sea, and air.
Beyond its wartime significance, Bletchley Park heralded the dawn of the information age. It was here that groundbreaking technologies like the Turing/Welchman Bombe and Colossus were developed, machines that laid the foundation for modern computing electronic data processing. These innovations not only changed the course of the war but also set the stage for the digital revolution that continues to shape our world today.
Alces chose Bletchley Park as the venue for Sustainable Reality 2024 due to its significant historical importance and its ongoing relevance to the fields of HPC, AI and Inclusivity. This event is a tribute to the ingenuity of the codebreakers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, using cutting edge technology to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges.
Event Highlights
Engage with the Enigma
A highlight of Sustainable Reality 2024 is the interactive session featuring the Enigma machine. Invented by German engineer Arthur Scherbius, the Enigma machine was considered unbreakable by its creators. However, the brilliant minds at Bletchley Park successfully deciphered Enigma traffic, providing Allies with invaluable intelligence. At Sustainable Reality, attendees will have the opportunity to examine an Enigma machine up close and participate in code-breaking activities.
Guided Tours
Explore Bletchley Park’s historic grounds and buildings through guided tours. Learn the stories of renowned codebreakers such as Alan Turing and Gordon Welchman, and see firsthand how their work contributed to Allied victory. Attendees will gain insights into the technologies that revolutionised wartime intelligence with an onsite expert from the Bletchley Park team.
