Sustainable Reality, 2024

Moving the Needle in HPC

Held at Bletchley Park on September 25, we revisited the four pillars of HPC: Hardware, Software, People, and Change – with an all new perspective.

From new hardware implementations and technical breakthroughs, to community shifts  – we explored:

  • How sustainability is driving technological innovation and
  • How building the right legacy is impacting our teams, hiring, and community.

Our aim? Capture our growth and discuss the next steps we need to take to continue to make an impact – no matter how big or small.

Hear from Change Makers

Bletchley Park is the home to change makers, so it comes as no surprise that our agenda covers a wide range of cutting-edge topics.

Our event presentations and recordings are now being processed.  We are pleased to announce that our speakers hailed from a wide range of institutions including University of York, University of Cambridge, Northern Ireland High Performance Computing (NI-HPC), Borealis, Amazon Web Services (AWS), The Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG), and Women in HPC (WHPC).

Interact with Enigma

Bletchley Park holds a special place in history as the site where the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) deciphered military codes and ciphers during World War Two, contributing significantly to the Allied victory. This legacy of HPC is exemplified by the innovative methods and machines developed by Bletchley Park, such as the Turing/Welchman Bombe and Colossus, the world’s first electronic computer.

As a special agreement with the Bletchley Park team we were able to undertake an interactive demonstration with an Enigma machine.  Alongside of this special demonstration, attendees were treated to site tours.

Engage with Community

We all know that attending events like this is an opportunity to connect with members of the HPC and AI communities.  This event proved no different, as we  opened the day up to anyone working, studying, or just interested in our field.

We are excited to announce that we had a speaker ratio of 40% female, 60% male, and that our audience included a nearly equal mix of attendees, including those from our non-binary community.

We were 60% academic, 20% industry, and 15% government/council in terms of job representation.  We were equally grateful to note that there were 5% early career attendees present who were there to grow their networks.
