Agenda

Sustainable Reality 2024

Our Summary Agenda

We are pleased to outline our agenda for our September 25th event at Bletchley Park.  Set into three sessions, we’ll be covering both the technical and social aspects of our field.

We are also delighted to have members of the Bletchley Park team bring some of the history of out event site to life.  Our extended lunch will offer tours and our event finale will feature a hands-on demonstration of an Enigma Machine.

Welcome & Keynote

Our day starts at 10:00 AM in the Fellowship Auditorium.

  • Welcome from Alces Flight
  • Keynote from the University of York: Lessons in sustainable HPC.

We will then host a coffee and comfort break.

Morning Session

Our morning session will start at approximately 11:00 AM in the Fellowship Auditorium.

  • University of Cambridge: System Implementation of the Wilkes3 GPU Cluster.
  • Northern Ireland High Performance Computing (NI-HPC): Managing HPC Communities
  • Red Hat: The Pros and Cons of Open Source and Commercial Software
  • Borealis: Exploring Net Zero Data Centres

We will host a Q&A session before our extended lunch.

Extended Lunch and Tours

Our extended lunch session will start at approximately 12:30 PM in the Radley Room adjoining the Fellowship Auditorium.

Attendees interested in exploring Bletchley Park with a tour guide will be invited to join in from 1:00 PM for an hour long tour.

The tours will set off in groups to keep things small in order to enable a more personalised experience.

Those wishing to explore on their own or take this time to themselves are also welcome to do so during this period.

Afternoon Session

Our afternoon session will commence at approximately 2:00 PM in the Fellowship Auditorium.

  • Welcome Back from Alces Flight
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS): Experimenting in HPC/AI on cloud
  • Alces Flight: Enabling cross-solution management in HPC/AI
  • Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG): Exploring neurodiversity in the workplace
  • Women in HPC: Lessons in equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA)

We will then host a short coffee, cake and comfort break before our big finale.

Enigma Machine Finale

Our closing session will commence at approximately 3:30 PM in the Fellowship Auditorium.

This session is interactive – those wishing to directly participate will be invited forward.  Attendees can, however, elect to simply watch.

Utilised heavily during World War II, the initial purpose of the Enigma Machines was for Nazi Germany to send secure, encrypted messages to their troupes.

To combat this, the team at Bletchley Park set out build on work from Allied partners, and this eventually resulted in the first digital electronic computers.

We are delighted to have the team at Bletchley Park present a working demonstration of one of the Enigma Machines of the period as our event finale.
